Released on vinyl in 1981 by the long-defunct Japanese label Atlas Records and now due for reissue by Sunnyside Records with an extra, never-before-released track, Stargazer offers a fresh look at an artist then-emerging as a dynamic creative force.For Donelian, the sting isn't just that the music was essentially unheard for 45 years. \"It wasn't even reviewed in Downbeat or other American publications because it was an import,\" he says. He recorded and produced the album in 1980 in New York with his much better established compatriots. A year later he struck a deal with Atlas for the Japanese release. The masters reverted to Donelian when the label went under years ago. But he bided his time, preferring to forge ahead with new music rather than look backward. With the approach of his 75th birthday in December, though, he \"felt strongly this was a document that needed to be available,\" he says. \"I've been very fortunate to meet and work with incredible musicians throughout my life. I never really look back that much on my career, or even think about the idea of a 'career.' To me, what I've always loved to do is moving forward into the explorative space, the unknown. After this comes out, I've got another album scheduled on Sunnyside. I'm not by any means tied to the past.\"The past, however, has a good deal to say about Donelian, starting with the album's title track, an intricate, sweeping tune defined by the trio's volatile interaction. Composed after the death of his mother, \"Stargazer\" wasn't so much written for her as inspired by Donelian's grief and his memories of wonder as a child looking out at the night sky with a telescope. \"It all went into the mix of this somewhat ruminative composition, but Eddie and Billy gave it the propulsion,\" says Donelian, noting that he's recorded the piece on three subsequent albums and includes it in almost every concert. \"The way Billy plays really shaped the piece. He's very interactive, completely free yet taking care of business at the same time.\"Completely free also describes the trio's approach to the final piece recorded at the session, the aptly titled, \"Free at Last.\" From the ringing dissonance of the opening notes the performance evolves as the three players listen and respond to each other, moving through several modes and moods without a road map or destination. A tender ballad inspired by a woman with whom Donelian was infatuated, \"Southern Belle\" features Gomez exploring a harmonic landscape the pianist entered during his studies with Richie Beirach, a brilliantly probing improviser with a rarefied musical vocabulary pioneered on his 1976 ECM debut album Eon. Gomez had become one of jazz's most esteemed bassists during an 11-year tenure with piano legend Bill Evans, and he brings similar distilled lyricism and intensity to the piece. It also includes a few surprises, particularly for those listeners who think of Flanagan as primarily a bop stylist.When swing was succeeded by bop as jazz's modern mainstream, the function of the piano changed from being a timekeeper to take part of the rhythm section. While the pre-1945 styles of jazz piano had the pianists keeping time with his or her left hand, usually by striding back and forth between bass notes and chords, in bebop that role is usually handled by the string bassist. Bop pianists use their left hands to hit chords on a more unpredictable basis, accenting beats like a drummer \"dropping bombs, \" while their right plays hornlike lines.That approach works perfectly in trio settings but can leave some pianists sounding incomplete when taking unaccompanied solos. Bud Powell, the leader in the field, was able to imply the beat and slightly adjust his style when playing solos. In the case of Tommy Flanagan, his ability to play swing was a major asset and in a solo setting he often added a modified stride, as can be heard on his version of Sleeping Bee.On swing-oriented numbers such as Isn't It Romantic, Sleeping Bee and Yesterdays, Flanagan always kept the melody close by even while creating improvised variations. One never has a problem knowing where the pianist is for he builds his improvisations off of the melody rather than simply discarding the theme in favor of jamming over it's chord changes. He follows those classic songs with an infectious version of Stompin' at the Savoy that manages to sound both vintage and modern.To conclude the enjoyable program, Flanagan performs a song apiece by three great composers of the bebop era (Dizzy Gillespie's Con Alma, Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now, and Thelonious Monk's Ruby, My Dear) before ending the set with a joyful rendition of Lover.By the time Tommy Flanagan left Ella Fitzgerald's backup band in 1978, his series of trio recordings had reminded the jazz world that he was a brilliant and very musical pianist. He worked steadily during the next 23 years, touring Europe and Japan while being based in New York and remaining one of the most consistently satisfying of all jazz pianists. Flanagan passed away on Nov. 16, 2001 at the age of 71 but he has never been forgotten. Tommy Flanagan is remembered with love, respect and admiration for his playing and his classy nature. A much better recording than his studio cult classic Saturday Night Special, this live set laid the groundwork for the continuation of Woodard's career for decades to come and showed his fellow Detroiter's that better days lay ahead. Where the title track is happy and a bit more commercial than the rest with it's slinky, straight, finger-popping, sublime beat and seductive vocal line, 'Disco Tease' prances along in a hard rock vein with conga accents from Lorenzo Brown and chicken scratch, dramatic guitar chords from Lowe. 'Down Lowe' is a concrete, fatback groove from the guitarist, while 'Djarum' turns the wick down in a slow, sexy nightshade visage, with Kerry Campbell's soprano sax expanding the horn section with Woodard's organ in stretched out phrases. The appropriately titled 'Theme in Search of a Sports Spectacular' is the killer track, as trumpeter Marcus Belgrave joins the band in an Olympic sprint, an irresistible melody that is catchy, infectious, memorable, and anthematic as any warrior clarion call to battle in the athletic arena. This driven, tenacious, forceful piece of music still stands the test of time for it's ferocious attitude and champion-like strut. The two of them recorded six tracks which ranged from covers of standards, through soul-jazz through to two real gems. The album was originally released as Ed Kelly and Friend due to Pharoah being contracted to Arista Records at the time. Indeed, as you can see, the cover shows Kelly playing next to Pharoah's hat, shoes and Selmer tenor saxophone. Rainbow Song, a Kelly composition, opens matters in a manner far removed from Pharoah's work on his Impulse albums (although there had been a dramatic change of course when he signed with Arista and recorded). This is firmly in Grover Washington Junior territory with a liberal sprinkling of oh so tasteful strings. The Master's sound is full and mighty as ever. With the radio track out of the way, it is business as hoped for and Newborn is a Sanders composition that burns with intensity. The power of his solo is as good as anything he has produced and he runs over the full span of the tenor's range and onwards into territory lesser-known or explored by 99% of sax players. Sam Cooke's You Send Me is treated with reverence and respect, with Pharoah delivering a sensitive and heartfelt rendition and ending with some extraordinary phonics, which we will meet again on later albums. Kelly's accompaniment complements Sander's playing before he receives his own space for a shimmering yet restrained solo which discloses what this non-pianist assumes to be an agile right hand. Answer Me My Love is an early 50's ballad with a fascinating back story. On it's initial release in post-war Britain, covers of this fine melody stirred sufficient controversy for the song to be banned by the BBC. What led to it being barred from broadcast on the Light Programme and treated like Anarchy For The UK, Wet Dream and Give Ireland Back To The Irish? I can reveal that the reason for this draconian action was that the original version was entitled 'Answer Me, My Lord'. In the olden days, it seems that a direct appeal to God was considered to be blasphemous- especially if set in a secular or selfish. Further research indicates that Nat King Cole made the most celebrated recording and that Bob Dylan used to sing it live in the 1990s, presumably during his overtly Christian phase. Anyway, it is a grand tune. Pharoah went on to record at least three studio versions of his great anthem You've Got To Have Freedom but the one here is the earliest incarnation that I am aware of. It is also the most restrained treatment of the theme, although Pharoah's solo shows his ability to play with fire and power over the entire range of the horn.
